9038 :: The Root of Yoga :: 12.20.09

*$20 Early bird registration by Dec 6

This event marks the beginning of a series of 7 class/workshops comprising Yoga Sadhaka Training, to be held once a month throughout Los Angeles culminating in June of 2009.

Sadhaka is a Tantric term for "practitioner." The aim of this course is to train individuals in becoming practitioners of the Yogic path, in order to access the depth of wisdom and transformation possible beyond the enjoyment of physical postures and brief periods of meditation. The first half of each class will focus on yogic philosophy, subtle physiology, and elements of various forms of practice. The second half will take the form of a physical Yoga practice, integrating the principles learned and ending in meditation. Each workshop will be linked with one of the chakras, beginning with the Root center in December and completing with the Crown center in June. Students may take as many classes as they like, pre-register or drop in (*space is limited, pre-registration is encouraged). There is no experience necessary. This course will deeply enrich the knowledge & practice of any Yoga Teacher, and will give new students a strong foundation in the Yogic methods who have no background in study or practice. Physical practice will be for all levels!

9037: Walking the Edge with Starhawk

////////// THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT \\\\\\\\\

Walking the Edge with Starhawk::
In nature, edges, where one ecosystem meets another, are the places of greatest dynamism, energy and creativity. Where the meadow meets the forest or the ocean meets the shore, we find the most diversity, and also the most stress. In this evening talk, we explore our own edges. How do we walk between worlds? When have we been outsiders, marginalized--and what unique vision arises from the boundaries? How do we challenge our own edges? What boundaries are healthy, and which constrict us unnecessarily? How do we push our own creative edges, taking more risks, pushing our work, our rituals, and expression further into excellence?

Starhawk is one of the most respected voices in modern earth-based spirituality. She is also well-known as a global justice activist and organizer, whose work and writings have inspired many to action. Starhawk is perhaps best known as an articulate pioneer in the revival of the Goddess religion.

She is a veteran of progressive movements, from anti-war to anti-nukes, and is deeply committed to bringing the techniques and creative power of spirituality to political activism. She is internationally known as a trainer in nonviolence and direct action, and an activist within the peace movement, women's movement, environmental movement, and anti-globalization movement.

Starhawk is the author or coauthor of eleven books, including the classics The Spiral Dance and The Fifth Sacred Thing. Her latest is her first book for children: The Last Wild Witch. Starhawk's writing is influential and has been quoted by hundreds of other authors, turning up in magazines, trade and academic press. Her books are often found in college curriculums.
